Title: 8 December 2012
You know we are getting dry. That rain last Sunday was great for the grass, gardens and hemp crop but we need more (sorry) the soil is dry and the water in the ponds are down. The rain at the Farmers Market sure kept people away and for us our take was well down. But the whole feel was great and its great to see the locals.
Our new volunteer Hayley is fitting in very well, hails from the US of A. She is staying in the shepherd wagon and is very like minded to the way we farm etc.
THE HEMP CROP IS UP yaa......... well just up could do with another rain on it but the Rain on Sunday sure helped. With all that dry I'm sure we lost some seed to the birds but I think it will be fine. This week we will be installing the Surveillance cameras just in case some smart ass thinks its worth pinching to smoke. They would get more from dock leaves but ya cant tell some people.
Ila and her friend Daisy are camping in the House truck hunting and foraging. Daisy got me to cart her horse here so with Ila and Tim her pony they spent the days trekking and hunting. On day One I'm glad I did not go there for tea as all they had managed to get was a magpie and when I dropped the horse off for Daisy it was skinned and hanging in the trees ready for tea. But they have since got 3 goats and some rabbits so Abbey the Dog and them are happy. Before getting the horse there they were using our 2WD farm ute we use to cart stock. They drove it over to the back of the farm and up to the back Food Forest forgetting you can't drive a ute with a 6 foot stock crate under trees that have heavy branches at 5 foot. So they managed to pull the crate and side boards off and onto a very steep track and in doing so bent up the head board and front rack. So I had to get the Gipsy and load and carry it all home (the stock crate is very heavy). Ruth had managed to get the ute back for them. They both are very sensible girls and it was hard to get mad with them.
The Gas is all sorted in the Truck now so it has an oven and cook top and a hot shower as well as the outside BBQ. We do still need to get the curtains and fit a permanent shower box.
On Saturday we ran a module with Dee out here on Livestock in a permacuture system. What a great group of People. On the farm walk it was good to point out the grapes and other heritage trees laden with fruit, when looking at animals.
So getting sorted for Both Fielding And Taranaki Farmers market this week.
